  • How are things at Mosaic?

    Posted: July 9th, 2009
    by Kasey Newbold

I am often asked the question, or some variation of the question, “How are things going at Mosaic?”. I usually find this question hard to answer. If I reply simply, “good”, ten people may have ten different ideas of what exactly “good” means. more »

  • 6 clothed people and a cow trough…intrigued?

So we’re at a party one Saturday evening, and Kasey says that he’s going to preach about I Peter Chapter 3 the next day and talk about baptism.  He’s asking what we think about setting up a temporary baptistery.    I was instantly excited about the idea, being a fan of baptism and all, but all I could think about were the logistics.  What would we use?  My kids’ baby pool was too small, so was the largest Rubbermaid tote we could find.  Kasey found a cow trough at Tractor Supply—that was the ticket!  But what about the weight of 300 gallons of water—could our building support over a ton in one spot?  What about clothes and towels and the time change—would anyone want to be baptized? more »

  • Anxious Thoughts

“If I say, ‘Surely the darkness will hide me and the light will become night around me,’ even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.”                     ~Psalm 139:11-12

Scott spoke Sunday about trusting in the Lord’s sovereignty and goodness—something with which I struggle on a daily basis. Anyone who knows me well knows that I am full of anxiety. I worry about tornadoes and fires and car accidents…and tornadoes. I worry about something happening to my husband, something happening to me, and my husband being left alone. And now, with a 5-week old baby in my life my fears have increased exponentially.  Most days I feel a prisoner of fear and I am reminded of the day Scott spoke about hope and quoting his friend he said, “The categories of optimism and pessimism don’t exist for me. I am a prisoner of hope. I am going to die full of hope.” And I LONG for my chains of captivity to be those of hope instead of fear. more »

  • Adolescent clarity? Right.

As a kid growing up in the church, I heard about baptism every Sunday- but there was only one truly cool place to be baptized: Christian summer camp.  For those who haven’t experienced Christian summer camp, it’s a week every summer where hundreds if not thousands of pre-pubescent middle schoolers gather in one location for food fights, “the blob”, skits, summer love, singing “Friends are Friends forever”, campfires, cry-fests, and confessionals.  In my experience, this was also the place where on the last day of camp everyone was convicted of their adolescent trespasses, and decided to get baptized. more »

  • And the cat’s in the cradle … and the man in the moon.

I have to admit that I’m always up for a good analogy…or even a bad one.  Throw in a little imagery, and I’m hooked.  So, needlessness to say, I was excited as Kasey read the passage in First Peter 2, which describes believers as “a chosen people… who have been called out of darkness into His wonderful light.” Kasey went on to describe how darkness is the image of sin, but light is that which overtakes sin (the darkness).  After all, when you walk into a dark room, it doesn’t take a spotlight to overcome the darkness; simply light a match and the darkness will be gone.  more »

  • Perspective

    by Scott-O

Sometimes it is easy for us to view the Bible as a boring old book.  It
is ancient and uninteresting.  But then sometimes we are pleasantly
surprised when we are reminded how complex, exciting, and truly timeless
Scripture is.  This Sunday we found ourselves jumping around tracing the
roots of 1 Peter’s reference to Jesus as the Living Stone. more »

  • Jesus Rocks!

    by Joe Heller

So in case you missed it, Kasey taught “in the half-round” on Sunday. With large strips of paper taped to some of the mirrors in the main gathering room, he cited a cornucopia of biblical reference referring to Jesus as a rock or a stone or the living Stone. I believe he started with 1 Peter 2:4 and then jumped all over the place. If only he had had a lot of yarn to connect all the references to each other, it would have been a web to impress Dr. Suresh (yes a “Heroes” reference). more »

  • Something New

    by Kasey Newbold

So, as I said a few weeks ago, this is becoming more and more of a sporadic thing for me. I feel bad about that, I really do…just not bad enough to write more often. So, we’re going to try something new. Instead of just hearing about what’s important to me (like twice a year), we’ve asked for some of our friends we are in community with to start writing some blogs.

  • Let’s face it

    Posted: January 16th, 2009
    by Jess

Let’s face it: the economy stinks.  The Dow is dropping, factories are closing right and left, and I got yet another dreary bar graph from my IRA fund showing how my bottom line is bottoming out.  And yet, I still sit in a (somewhat) warm house with a lovely daughter and a little one on the way.  In short, I’m still happy.  How is that possible?   more »

mosaic podcast

misson

Mosaic exists to encourage people to begin their faith journey, to create a community where all can belong, to introduce people to a real Jesus in whom they can believe, and to encourage people to grow in their relationships with Christ and each other, so that together, we can all be whole.

core passion

Mosaic’s Core Passion is Worship. We worship by teaching the life changing truth of Scripture through culturally relevant environments and methods. We worship by striving for excellence in all we do, believing that excellence honors God and inspires people. We worship by creating authentic community through our transparency and loving relationships. We worship by sharing the Good News that God desires to know and be known by all people.

vision

To become a faith community in Irvington that daily lives out the gospel of Jesus Christ in all of its beauty through creative teaching, embracing and emphasizing the arts, equipping believers for ministry, acts of service, and transformational discipleship.

beliefs

We believe that the Bible (both the Old and New Testament) is the Word of God, and is therefore completely true as it was originally revealed by God to its human authors. 2 Timothy 3:15-16, 2 Peter 1:20-21

We believe in God the Father, the maker of heaven and earth. We believe that God is eternal, He always was and always will be. We believe that God is not far from us, and desires to know and be known by all people. Genesis 1, Isaiah 40:28, James 4:8

We believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. We believe that Jesus was sent to earth in the form of a man to redeem the world. He is the Messiah, or Savior, who died on a cross to pay the penalty for our sin, He arose from the dead three days later and ascended to heaven. Matthew 16:16, Philippians 2:6-8; John 3:16, 1Corinthians 15:3-4, Acts 1:1-2

We believe that the Holy Spirit is the indwelling presence of God in our lives. He empowers and emboldens us for works of service; and He enables us to understand and live out God’s will in our lives. 1 Corinthians 3:16, 1 Corinthians 12:7, John 16:13-15, Acts 1:8

We believe that all people are made in the image of God our creator, and therefore have inherent worth and value. We have been separated from God by our own selfish and disobedient attitudes and choices, known as sin. God desires to be reunited with us, and has made this possible through His Son Jesus. Genesis 1:27, Romans 3:23, Romans 5:9-12

We believe that Salvation is a gift from God that cannot be earned, but is given freely to those who accept His Son, Jesus. We believe that upon accepting Jesus one should repent of their sins (turn away from their selfish and disobedient attitudes and choices), confess Jesus as their Lord and Savior (tell others what they believe about Jesus), be baptized in His name (immersed in water as a symbolic death and resurrection), and then live daily for Him (trading our desires and choices for His desires and choices). John 3:16, Ephesians 2:8-9, Acts 2:38, Romans 10:9-10, Romans 14:7-8
